Thrones of Paradise —

TadabburBilingualAl-Waqi'ah 56:15

"On thrones, intricately woven." [Al-Waqi'ah 56:15]

One word, occurring only once in the entire Quran — describing the seats of the Forerunners brought near. What is the secret of this word? And what are the thrones the Quran mentions?

1. The Word and Its Single Occurrence

It comes in the description of the Forerunners:

"And the Forerunners, the Forerunners — those are the ones brought near [to Allah], in the Gardens of Pleasure: a multitude from the former peoples and a few from the later peoples, on thrones, intricately woven, reclining upon them, facing each other." [56:10–16]

2. The Thrones in the Quran — Five Occurrences

Allah mentions the thrones five times in the Quran, described in four ways — each for its people:

15 / thrones intricately woven — 56:15
For the Forerunners brought near — the highest rank: woven with gold and jewels in a masterful weave, like interlocked armor rings.
20 / thrones arranged in rows — 52:20
For the righteous — set side by side in order and splendor.
13 / thrones raised high — 88:13
In the elevated Garden — lofty in worth and station.
44 / thrones, facing one another — 37:44
47 / "brothers, on thrones facing each other" — 15:47
For Allah's devoted servants and the righteous: faces turned toward one another — resentment removed from breasts.

3. What the Exegetes Said About "Mawdunah"

— Al-Baghawi: "Woven, just as the rings of armor are interlaced, each entering into the other."
— The majority of exegetes: "Joined and woven with gold and jewels."
— Ad-Dahhak: "Mawdunah" means arranged in order — set with precision.

4. In the Language: w-d-n

The root w-d-n denotes tight, interlacing weave — like the rings of a coat of mail linked so they cannot come apart. Thus the "mawdunah" thrones: seats woven with mastery and perfection, befitting those who sit upon them.

Synonyms: throne / royal seat / dais (عرش), couch / sofa / divan / daybed (سرير), cushions (نمارق — 88:15), rich carpets spread out (زرابي — 88:16), green cushions (رفرف — 55:76), splendid furnishings (عبقري — 55:76).

5. From the Sunnah: Racing in This World Is Racing Toward the Thrones

"The Mufarridun have gone ahead." They said: Who are the Mufarridun, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Those men and women who remember Allah much." (Muslim)
And he ﷺ said: "Hasten to good deeds." (Muslim) — those who race toward good in this world are those who race in the Hereafter toward these thrones.

6. A Reflective Pause: The Thrones Vary with the Ranks

Consider the wisdom: the thrones vary with the ranks — the near Forerunners earned those woven with gold, the righteous earned those arranged in rows and raised high, each according to his striving. And these people wove their lifetimes in this world with devotion — prayer, remembrance, and kindness — a tight, interlaced weave leaving no gap for heedlessness; so their recompense matched their deed: seats woven with gold. And the recompense is of the same kind as the deed.

7. A Message for You

Reflect: The thrones of the Forerunners are intricately woven — so what are you weaving each day? Every glorification a thread, every prayer a thread, every charity a thread… Look at what your hands weave, for tomorrow you shall recline upon it.

"And the Forerunners, the Forerunners" — O Allah, make us among the Forerunners.
