The Wine of Paradise —
"There will circulate among them young boys made eternal, with vessels, pitchers, and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring — no headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated." [56:17-19]
After describing the seats of the Forerunners — the intricately woven thrones — Allah describes their drink: wine from a flowing spring, yet the utter opposite of the wine of this world. What is the secret of these two words: yusaddaʿūn and yunzafūn?
1. The Scene: Unceasing Service
"Immortal boys" — youths forever young, never aging — circulate among the people of Paradise with vessels and pitchers, and a cup from a maʿīn: a flowing spring that never runs dry. The service is constant, the drink ever renewed, the bliss never depleted.
2. In the Language: Yuṣaddaʿūn and Yunzafūn
"Yuṣaddaʿūn" comes from the root ṣ-d-ʿ, whose basic sense is splitting — whence a crack in glass and a headache in the head. The meaning: no headache strikes them from it, as though the head were splitting — unlike the wine of this world, which bequeaths headache and hangover.
"Yunzafūn / yunzifūn" comes from the root n-z-f, whose basic sense is emptiness and depletion — whence the flowing of blood. The meaning: their minds are never drained by intoxication, nor is their drink ever depleted. Both are authentic canonical readings: yunzafūn and yunzifūn.
The wine of this world: pleasure purchased with headache and lost reason. The wine of Paradise: the pleasure remains, the harm removed — "no headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated."
3. What the Exegetes Said
— Ibn Kathir notes in his tafsir: "they are not overtaken by headache therefrom" — no headache strikes them as it strikes the drinker of worldly wine — "nor are they intoxicated" — their minds are not taken away.
— Al-Tabari sets out both readings of yunzafūn / yunzifūn, both revolving around the negation of intoxication and loss of reason.
4. The Hadith: Deprived of It in the Hereafter
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever drinks wine in this world and does not repent of it will be deprived of it in the Hereafter." (Agreed upon — Al-Bukhari & Muslim.)
Whoever repents before death — Allah accepts his repentance. But whoever persisted in drinking it until death is deprived of this bliss; the recompense matches the deed: whoever preferred the poisoned wine of this world is deprived of the purified wine of Paradise.
5. The Prohibition Came in Stages — Protecting the Intellect
Allah forbade wine in this world to protect the intellect — one of the five necessities — and the prohibition came gradually, as a mercy to people:
"They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: in them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit."
"Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated."
"Wine, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them." [5:90]
6. A Message for You
Reflect: The wine of Paradise comes with no headache and no intoxication — so what will you give up for Allah today, that He may replace it with something better tomorrow? Every forbidden pleasure abandoned for Allah is replaced with a purified pleasure, free of all harm.
"And whoever fears Allah — He will make for him a way out." And whoever gives up something for Allah, Allah replaces it with something better.
