A reflection on artificial intelligence and fatwa: the machine gathers knowledge — only a qualified heart signs on behalf of Allah.

Today people ask the machine about the lawful and the unlawful. It answers in seconds with neatly arranged texts and classified opinions — and the questioner imagines he has received a fatwa. He has not.

The machine gathers but does not exercise ijtihad; it retrieves texts but does not apply them to reality; it crafts a fine answer but bears none of its weight. And a fatwa — as the scholars established — is a signature on behalf of Allah Almighty, and none signs on His behalf except one who fears standing before Him, who carries the trust, and who knows that the word leaving his mouth may raise him or ruin him.

The difference between gathering information and issuing a fatwa is like the difference between one who carries the medicine and one who diagnoses the illness, determines the dose, and bears the consequence. A fatwa is a compound process: understanding the texts, knowing the objectives of the Sharia, comprehending reality, verifying the effective cause, considering custom, and weighing benefits against harms — all of these are the work of a believing heart and an exerting mind; they cannot be replicated on silicon chips.

And the machine — for all its brilliance — may invent a text that never existed with the confidence of a master scholar, attribute a saying to one who never said it, or miss the questioner's particular circumstances, his situation, and the tears unseen between the lines of his question. So how can trust be placed in one who neither fears nor hopes, and who will never be questioned on the Day of Judgment?

This is not a rejection of technology; the default ruling on means is permissibility, and whatever serves a legitimate objective takes its ruling. So let the machine be a servant of ijtihad: gathering opinions, organizing material, pointing to sources, and shortening the researcher's path — then the qualified scholar steps in to review, verify, weigh, and give fatwa, with full religious and scholarly responsibility remaining on his shoulders.

Key takeaway

AI is a willing assistant, not a mufti. It may assist but never replace independent religious judgment — the faith is a trust, and a trust cannot be delegated to one who cannot bear it.

O Allah, grant us beneficial knowledge, and hearts that fear You in fatwa as they fear You in prayer.
